Comment by Niko Rergo on March 31, 2011 at 21:59 T'aven baxtale!
[tavEn baxtalE] - capitals mark stressed vowels. The letter x marks [x], [h] depending on dialects.
Grammar: t'aven = te aven where: aven - 2 (you) and 3 (they) persons of plural, Present Indefinite; particle te in this word combination - subjunctive. Baxtale - adj. pl. of baxtalo (m.) and baxtali (f.) happy. Baxt (happiness) + suf. al- + endings -o/-i/-e.
The sandhi, i.e. the fusion of vowels across word boundaries, in this case e + a > a, is marked with apostrophe but one may write without marking this sandhi: te aven...
Meaning: Be happy = addressed to more then one person. Resp. T'aves baxtalo addressed to one man, T'aves baxtali - one woman.
It's a traditional greeting among us used when we meet or call, equvalents are Good morning, afternoon, evening.
Other situations when it could be used:
when somebody says he/she has child(ren) - resp. T'avel baxtalo(i) or t'aven baxtale! So we express our respect to the father/mother by wishing happiness to his/her child(ren);
when somebody sneezes - t'aves...
-----------
Next time: Mishto san!
Comment by Niko Rergo on March 31, 2011 at 23:11 Sure, Baxt instead T'aves baxtalo like Morning instead Good morning. So we say here, usually as Baxt sastipe [baxsastipe] but mostly addressing the elders or equals.
Anyway, Glendajo, the Khetanes! idea works! Khetanes ame kam lekhas jekh chachi sytimaski pustik. Neisarav tuke jilesa!
