ROMANO  THEM  TRANSMISSION

Last deadline for application was 15 October 2012;

Those who want to add proposals or add or change some details, are requested to send this information asap to Artists_Initiative@ziggo.nl

Call for projects for :

-     Artists offering live shows (music, theater, dance and other performances),

-     Visual artists (photography, painting, video arts, exhibitions, etc.);

-     Craftsmen who can demonstrate their know-how in e.g. workshops;

-     Scholars ready to give lectures on the current situation of Roma and to develop educational programs and workshops on the Romani language, culture, history and traditions;

-     Engineers/researchers/architects who forward innovative solutions in new technologies for a better social, economical and ecological environment.

Thus we realize an artistic creation in the midst of the mise en scène of arts and crafts and the contribution of the Romani culture to European civilizations.

Our project will promote the integration of Romani culture through this artistic creation and information aimed at social inclusion and intercultural dialog.

The Project Romano Them Transmission develops on three axes

Axe 1

Romano Them: The collective creation for 2013

Search for European cultural structures for transverse partnerships, in order to establish a collective creation residence, where artists, scholars and artisans, focusing on the Romani heritage, can cooperate.

Contents of the creation residence:

We want to create a visual and musical repertoire, that brings together traditional art, contemporary art and avant-garde of todays Romani creation, in view of future events/performances in European universities/schools, as well as audio/video recording (CD/DVD Romano Them) involving in sound and image the claims and quest for recognition of the Roma people in Europe.

Axe 2

Collection of platelets with an overview of projects and performances, "turnkey" in the categories mentioned in order to organize several tours and interventions in the universities/schools in Europe.

Axe 3

Contact and consult the regions and cities where the performances, exhibitions and possible interventions will take place.

Invite Roma and artists living on site to participate and exchange views live, in order to spread the message of Romani Them and to demonstrate the interactivity, the ability of intercultural dialog and the genius of improvisation in the Romani culture.

ROMANO THEM TRANSMISSION

ROMANO  THEM

There are peoples, all different but all equal.

There are Roma, us. There are non-Roma, them… All equal but all different.

The latter, do they know us?  They have heard rumors and stories

But they have not heard our stories, they do not know us.

We want to reveal who we are, we want to share our culture, our poetry, our prose. We want to share our music and show the mastery that is ours in so many areas...

A thousand years ago, we left old India to head for young Europe. These were bad times. We had to leave without carrying a lot of luggage with us...

In our hearts, we carried our way of life and our traditions of storytelling and singing...

When we made a stop, our hands created our crafts

We are born artists.

In Europe, we have become Austrians, Germans, Serbians, Spaniards, French, Swedes, Poles, Belgians, Romanians… We know Cyrillic, Latin, Greek, Arabic… Our families are Orthodox, Muslims, Catholics, Protestants, Buddhists, Humanists and Hindus…

But our language knows only one word for God: O Devel.

Our language, Romanes, has its roots in Sanskrit and it is our one and only country.

Our country is called Romano Them. It cannot be found on the map because it has no borders. Yet, it is the most European country, with all its beliefs, all its languages, all its alphabets.

It is also the most artistic country: visual arts, music, dance, theater, film, literature, architecture and crafts.

We want to share this treasure with you, because art is the only language we all know. It allows you and us to understand beauty, it helps you and us to find the essence, it helps you and us to follow a new avenue and thus it brings together you and us.

After all, we are all human beings, all Europeans, all equal.

        ROMANO THEM

Unser Land heißt Romano Them.

Romano Them is also a huge "shop":

This new group Romano Them Transmission, is going to be a kind of artistic supermarket, with all artistic disciplines in the shelves, from all corners of Europe and outside.

We need to make an inventory of possible contributions by musicians, dancers, actors, painters, sculptors, photographers, craftsmen and others.

With how many people do you want to perform, what is the duration of your performance, which are the expences?

With a good inventory of all possible contributions, programmes can be made and offered to schools, universities and community centres.

Also grant applications can only we drafted if we know your scale of fees and costs.

Combinations of several artistic disciplines are an option: e.g. theatre & dance, music & dance, dance & lecture, photo exhibition & lecture, film screening & lecture, film screening & video workshop...

International cooperation:

Very important is that our artistic programmes have an international character, with artists and/or scholars involved from different countries. We welcome proposals in which yourself have already taken into account this cross-border aspect.

Who will participate?

Romano Them is a transmission of Romani art, culture and history. It goes without saying that Roma, Sinti, Kale, Manouches and Yenish are the first ones to participate. We will and cannot not exclude cooperation with non-Roma, as it also happens on this website. We think, however, that Roma must play the first fiddle.

Questions left? Let's confer by mail or ons this site and clarify. Summer is arriving fast and by then the first programmes must be ready. We hope that beginning 2013 we can start to implement them.

Kind regards,

Els

Dear Ema thaj amale,

I am a writer and would like to be involved, but I am in the U.S. If we are truly the World Artists Initiative, may we not focus on bringing our artists of all disciplines across our seas and back? I have for some time envisioned a directory of films, musicians, artists, writers, etc., who can be included in tours and programs. I am interested in that broad a span. Since the U.S. State Department has announced (without consulting us) that the U.S. will participate in the Decade of Roma Inclusion (or Exclusion), I believe we can build a presence that will make it hard for government on either side of the Atlantic, or across the world, to plan without us. There will be issues, like visas, but we need visibility, here, there, and everywhere. There is much to take my attention here, like our new online prep school for our young people. It is a question of where our efforts can best bear fruit. We care very much about what is happening to our people in Europe, and sometimes feel frustrated that we cannot help more. How can we participate with Romano Them? That is the question.

Dear Glenda,

Your joining this group will be mostly welcomed. We need your skills and commitment.

The fact that we focus on Europe, has everything to do with the scary situation there:  populism, far right, growing violence. And the history in which maybe more than one million Roma have been killed.

This is a World Artists Initiative and only together (Khetanes) we will manage to stop the dangerous escalation in which mankind might repeat Europe's darkest past.

Moreover, many Roma from the States, South-America or Australia have European roots, which can be seen in their names. They left Europe, Czech Republic, Hungary, Russia, Italy, Bulgaria and other countries to have a better life on the other side of the Atlantic or the Pacific.

Please, join Romano Them Transmission and help us developping program(me)s, that will educate Europe!

P.S.: Thanks for joining!

Dear Ema,

Thank you so much for the invitation! I am surprised and touched.

You shall know, that I agree what Els had said: "Roma... first..."

I will do my very best to give support.

Dear Els and Viola,

Thank you also for your clear, precise and easily understandable description of the group and the translation!

Warm regards to you all!

Pit

Of course, I understand completely why we are focusing on Europe. And of course Roma are everywhere and many here have recently come from Europe. Immigration policies are very much an issue here, especially in Canada. I am happy to come there and read with European Roma. And I would be happy to assist with Roma who wish to come here. Xylena Apotheloz and I have begun planning a multimedia show that can easily travel, and we hope to expand it by discipline and individuals participating. As Els knows, Xylena is Swiss but lives here. As Khetanes drafts materials, they can be circulated here to gain support and disseminate knowledge about what is happening in Europe. Then there is the question of how the U.S. will participate in the Decade of Roma "Inclusion," as they have announced they will do.

We are trying now to discover how the U.S. drafted this policy without participation from our community here.
Comment by Els on March 23, 2012 at 12:44

Dear Glenda,

That is what happens in Europe all te time. At the level of decision makers, Roma are completely absent! Worse: they are not even consulted. That is why inclusion fails. I am eager to know more about the multimedia show! Though live presence is the best, it is good to have an opportunity to share and spread the message by recording it.

I am also happy to see you here, Hans. It was Ema's idea to include members like you, with your Housing project. I first thought it could be part of another group, but I agree with Ema that it is better and much more interesting to include it in the Romano Them program. Same goes for the Garden Project.

Thanks for joining, Hans!
