Our project will promote the integration of Romani culture through this artistic creation and information aimed at social inclusion and intercultural dialog.

The Project Romano Them Transmission develops on three axes

Axe 1

Romano Them: The collective creation for 2013

Search for European cultural structures for transverse partnerships, in order to establish a collective creation residence, where artists, scholars and artisans, focusing on the Romani heritage, can cooperate.

Contents of the creation residence:

We want to create a visual and musical repertoire, that brings together traditional art, contemporary art and avant-garde of todays Romani creation, in view of future events/performances in European universities/schools, as well as audio/video recording (CD/DVD Romano Them) involving in sound and image the claims and quest for recognition of the Roma people in Europe.

Axe 2

Collection of platelets with an overview of projects and performances, "turnkey" in the categories mentioned in order to organize several tours and interventions in the universities/schools in Europe.

Axe 3

Contact and consult the regions and cities where the performances, exhibitions and possible interventions will take place.

Invite Roma and artists living on site to participate and exchange views live, in order to spread the message of Romani Them and to demonstrate the interactivity, the ability of intercultural dialog and the genius of improvisation in the Romani culture.

ROMANO THEM TRANSMISSION

ROMANO  THEM

There are peoples, all different but all equal.

There are Roma, us. There are non-Roma, them… All equal but all different.

The latter, do they know us?  They have heard rumors and stories

But they have not heard our stories, they do not know us.

We want to reveal who we are, we want to share our culture, our poetry, our prose. We want to share our music and show the mastery that is ours in so many areas...

A thousand years ago, we left old India to head for young Europe. These were bad times. We had to leave without carrying a lot of luggage with us...

In our hearts, we carried our way of life and our traditions of storytelling and singing...

When we made a stop, our hands created our crafts

We are born artists.

In Europe, we have become Austrians, Germans, Serbians, Spaniards, French, Swedes, Poles, Belgians, Romanians… We know Cyrillic, Latin, Greek, Arabic… Our families are Orthodox, Muslims, Catholics, Protestants, Buddhists, Humanists and Hindus…

But our language knows only one word for God: O Devel.

Our language, Romanes, has its roots in Sanskrit and it is our one and only country.

Our country is called Romano Them. It cannot be found on the map because it has no borders. Yet, it is the most European country, with all its beliefs, all its languages, all its alphabets.

It is also the most artistic country: visual arts, music, dance, theater, film, literature, architecture and crafts.

We want to share this treasure with you, because art is the only language we all know. It allows you and us to understand beauty, it helps you and us to find the essence, it helps you and us to follow a new avenue and thus it brings together you and us.

After all, we are all human beings, all Europeans, all equal.

        ROMANO THEM

Unser Land heißt Romano Them.

Els - what a fantasticaly written piece. I love your ROMANO THEM TRANSMISSION. "In our hearts, we carried our way of life and our traditions of storytelling and singing..." - Such a great way of describing the traditions.

Thank you, Omar, but it was not only me who drafted the text. Ema and I made it together and these last weeks Ema has done a big job in organising the group and the logistics. We can learn from the experiences of two bands, Tabor and Via Romen, who are already working in schools and universities. Tabor in Europe, Via Romen in the States. This weekend I will send a message to all about Brussels, which was a very good and constructive event. An important step to realise our ideas!

SEE BELOW IMPORTANT NEWS FOR THIS GROUP: LET'S STRIVE FOR COOPERATION WITH THE MAYORS:

------------------------------------------------

European Network of Mayors- Mayors Making the Most of EU Funds for Roma Inclusion (MERI)

The Open Society Foundations’ Making the Most of EU Funds for Roma (MtM) programme is launching a new initiative to establish a European network of local governments which have implemented (or plan to implement) programmes supporting integration and inclusion of vulnerable groups with a focus on Roma. The Mayors Making the Most of EU Funds for Roma Inclusion Network (MERI) will promote the social inclusion and integration of Roma through best practice-sharing and learning across European countries, and bring to the forefront local level achievements. In addition, through building local municipal capacities, the MERI network plans to attract more EU funds to the local level. The philosophy behind the network is to create a space for local authorities to exchange on their Roma inclusion programs, to promote a learning venue and a visibility platform for municipalities which ultimately implement national strategies for Roma integration.

In the years 2009 – 2011, MtM helped Roma communities and municipal authorities in the Roma Decade countries generate Roma inclusion programmes and attract more EU funds. The MtM Project Generation Facilities (PgFs) - partnerships between municipalities, NGOs and Roma activists - have promoted Roma interest and placed inclusion on the radars of many local governments and regional level agencies. Through its PGFs, MTM raised 19,918,297 EUR in EU structural funds for 144 projects in the countries of Slovakia, Czech Republic, Romania, Bulgaria, and Hungary. In addition, In Slovakia, 30 local strategies for comprehensive approach for Roma inclusion strategies were developed, of which 24 were approved by national authorities; 8 regional strategies were developed and submitted for approval to Regional authorities in the Czech Republic and 8 local social inclusion strategies were adopted by local authorities in Romania.

However, it has become increasingly obvious that in many cases local authorities need empowerment in terms of skills and knowledge required to plan integrated local strategies and to provide services for disadvantaged Roma communities. In addition, local authorities often need support to properly involve Roma stakeholders in their strategies, and generally, a stronger political commitment to place Roma inclusion on their priority agendas. MTM aims at addressing these areas of concern through the MERI Network.

The MERI network plans to also invite municipalities from all EU countries which deal with inclusion and Roma as well as with EU funds and how they might be channelled for Roma integration programs. The purpose is to create a Europe-wide platform where possibilities for cooperation, joint programs for EU support and exchanges for solving challenging issues will be opened up and strengthened. The platform will be a learning and an advocacy opportunity at the same time.

The MERI network will be a Europe-wide network of municipalities which will host members from the following countries:

Comment by Els on April 29, 2012 at 13:45

SECOND PART: MERI NETWORK:

  • Countries where MtM has developed projects in the last three years through its Project Generation Facilities (PGF) - Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia and the Czech Republic;
  • The countries of the Western Balkans, where MtM is now establishing its partnerships – Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania

In the above countries, MERI will support capacity building and technical assistance programs at local levels through grants and expertise and assist members to organize exchanges with other members of MERI.

  • Any interested municipalities and mayors from any EU-member country involved in inclusion and Roma issues and would like to join the network.

These municipalities will have networking and informational access to the other MERI members, will be able to develop twinning programmes with them, will have access to a dedicated website, be invited to regional and annual events and will be eligible for awards for commitment and achievement on inclusion and Roma programs.

  • MERI will cooperate with other European initiatives such as the URBACT Roma-Net project and the Visegrad Mayors for Roma Inclusion Forum, as well as with the Council of Europe Alliance of Cities and Regions for Roma Inclusion and the Eurocities Roma Inclusion Task Force to develop exchanges, trainings and joint technical assistance programmes.

The MERI network launches also the Mayors Making the Most of EU Funds for Roma Awards. Best practices (supported with relevant case work) in using EU funds for Roma Inclusion in the areas of education, employment, health, housing and public utilities will be recognized at the first MERI Conference and Awards ceremony which will be hosted by the European Commission and MtM on 4 and 5 October 2012 in Budapest, under the patronage of László Andor, Member of the European Commission.

Mayors, will be kindly requested to commit to attending the event as they will be the main beneficiaries of the awards and the working session. Some representatives of NGO groups dedicated to inclusion work, representatives of associations of municipalities, and independent practitioners and policy makers involved in Roma inclusion will be invited to participate. The participation in the conference will be conditional on submission of good case work on Roma Inclusion happening in the last 5 years. We will encourage the participation of mayors as the awards will be provided to Mayors. More information on the call for cases is provided in the Call for Case Nominations.
