"Roma-ember Against Racism"

21/21 June 2014, Alte Kaserne Zürich

In the whole world Roma and Sinti are discriminated against, they are persecuted and forced to live in ghettos and camps.

Politically as well as through "Gypsy music" and other art, we want to draw Europe's attention on the situation of Roma and Sinti, and turn this event into a signal for understanding.

GOALS OF THE FESTIVAL:

  • Benefit concerts for the Hungarian village "Bódvalenke" in order to promote its international Roma Fresco art, painted on the walls of the houses of the villagers. The Festival also hosts an exhibition of Fresco photos.  Moreoreover we want to financially support the village infrastructure, so that Bódvalenke can  further develop into a model of Roma's and Sinti's own power, art and vitality

  • Sending a political wake-up call to Europe about the awful and inhumane situation of Roma and Sinti, in Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, France, Switzerland, etc. The importance of the speakers' forum is a lively debate that clearly points out that this Festival is not enough and that, also afterwards, we will have to keep up the political struggle. The past has never stopped;  the past is present in everyday life and threatens the future.

PRESS RELEASE ENGLISH, MAY 2014

Press Release

“Roma-Ember Against Racism”

20/21 June 2014, Alte Kaserne Zürich

First International Roma Festival in Zürich

On 20 and 21 June, the first International Roma Festival will take place in Zürich, Switzerland. With concerts, a huge photo-exhibition on the Fresco Village Bódvalenke and a discussion on stage with speakers from various countries, our aim is to strike out on a new course. A course of solidarity with persecuted Roma all over Europe, and a course against racism that also occurs in Switzerland.

In the past, many European countries have issued of lot of laws and orders against Roma. In France, this has led to forced evictions of Romanian Roma and in numerous cantons and cities in Switzerland, official bans on begging have been posted. In Italy, pogrom-like persecutions took place and in Hungary, Roma have even been killed in open violence. In many parts of Europe, Roma, Sinti and Yenish sail against an intensified racist wind of discrimination – millions keep on being outlawed as “zigeuner”. For minorities labeled like this, the harm is more serious than “only” a social stigma. It means first and foremost that they are consistently put at a disadvantage. In almost all European countries, Roma have poorer access to education, healthcare and the job market. They have a higher infant mortality and a shorter life expectance than the average population.

Also from a cultural point of view, we can observe a radical stigmatization. In recent years, the caricature of begging Roma with an unkempt appearance, who migrate in “hordes”, has been further blown up and perpetuated by the media.

The Roma Festival in Zürich aims to be a platform where Roma and non-Roma experts, in a stage discussion, will confer together on the recent situation in Europe to open up new perspectives. The role of participating artists is an important one. With their creativity and original working approaches, as well as with their readiness to perform benefit-concerts, they want to show politicians how to turn Europe into a house for all people.

Ziele des Festivals:

MEDIENMITTEILUNG DEUTSCH, MAY 2014

Medienmitteilung

„Roma-Ember Against Racism“

20/21 Juni 2014, Alte Kaserne Zürich

Erstes Internationales Romafestival in Zürich

ABOUT BODVALENKE:

The Fresco Village of Bódvalenke in Hungary, close to the border with Slovakia, is beneficiary of the International Romafestival "Roma-ember Against Racism".

Last year, 2013, Omar Bhatia from UK, came over to Bódvalenke, and made there this beautiful mural

One more new mural was made by Katharina Pollock from Germany. The mural right is called "Blessings from India"

How is Bódvalenke today?

Quotes from Eszter Pásztor, manager of the project:

In 2014 the village has 33 frescoes. The Fresco Village Project was launched in 2009. The basic idea was to invite Roma painters to paint murals on the walls of this extremely poor, 90% Roma village in the most underdeveloped region in Hungary.

Goals: globally, to win the appreciation of the majority population through the works of art that the Roma minority can also be proud of and thereby contribute to the social inclusion of the Roma; locally, by creating a tourist attraction, to provide a framework for job creation relying, to a large extent, on tourism, and for community building, children's programs, etc.

So far, 33 murals have been completed and the village has won fame and appreciation, witnessed also by the international press (Reuters, BBC, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Gulf Times, ORF, Der Standard, Al Jazeera, ART TV, etc.). We set up a social cooperative; there is a Waldorf teacher to work with the children; we run a "telehouse"; our Women's Choir was invited even to Brussels, to the European Parliament.

A success story, or...?

The main and most faithful financial supporter, the Hungarian Reformed Church Aid, cannot satisfy all the needs: e.g. running water in all the houses or a good sewer system...

Eszter: "Tourism has started and it already contributes to the livelihood of the locals (women cooking for tourists, local artisans selling their goods), but we still lack the basis infrastructure to really enable the village to make a living out of tourism."

Thanks to the Fresco Village Project, the children of Bódvalenke now attend primary school and also follow secondary education, but in winter the food at home is poor and the houses are cold. Yet there are plenty of viable plans to employ all villagers (in energy, agricultural and tourist projects). There are also available funds, but for any reason whatsoever these do not reach the village.

The proceeds from the benefit concerts will reach Bódvalenke. They will be handend over personally by the organizer, Christian Mehr!
