Eight months ago Roma Rights Defender Pavel Limanskiy was arrested in Russia. Accused of attacking the police that came to arrest him without proper documentation. Since that very day Pavel finds himself in pre-trial detention.

Today members of Khetanes sent a letter to President Vladimir Putin. We were in a hurry to contact co-signers. There are 22 now. There could have easily been 44 or more, but we needed to send the letter and count on your understanding for this.

Update on the situation of Pavel Limanskiy:

as some of you already know, Roma activist Pavel Limanskiy (Rostov-on-Don, Russia) is currently held for more then 8 months in pre-trial detention facility in the town of Novocherkassk, Rostov region.

Regional law enforcement authorities (Rostov region) accuse him in violation of articles 318 and 319 of a Penal Code of Russian Federation. It is about the physical attack on a group of policemen, who came to arrest him. As he says he did not attack them, neither they had proper documentation and reason to arrest him.

Pavel also says that he may receive 10 years of imprisonment and he was already 8 months in prison. They are offering him now a "compromise", which means that he would agree that he is guilty, but receives only light or conditional sentence. Pavel connects his problem to concern of Russian law enforcement authorities about general security in approach of Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.

His case is currently held and is going to be reviewed in Proletarskiy district court of Rostov-on-Don (Address: Karl Marx Square 10, Rostov-on-Don) by the judge Mrs. Torchinyan, who in Pavels opinion is not regarded as very much professional among the locals.

According to the most recent commmunication right now Pavel Limanskiy is in very critical condition and not sure IF he will survive there.
