Trial against Roberto Malini and Dario Picciau
(Members of Khetanes and Members of EveryOne Group, Italy)

Today, Friday, 27 April 2012, 10:30 a.m., Roberto Malini and Dario Picciau, two artists and human rights activists, will be in the Italian court of Pesaro. Both are facing possible prison sentences. Their crime?.. They opposed the human rights violations of Roma in Italy. So, not only Roma are persecuted, but also artists who defend their rights.

Both Roberto and Dario belong to the EveryOne Group, that is on our Khetanes site. All EveryOne Group members are artists. It should be stated here that they designed our logo: the butterfly, with the red Roma wheel and the words "inspiring justice". This logo is on our site and in all our publications, as a symbol of freedom and fundamental rights for all.

Today we are over 700 artists and scholars, from 48 countries in the entire world. Taking into account the orchestras, bands and theatre companies, we are 2500 at least.

Among the first ones to protest against the persecution of Roberto and Dario, is Juan de Dios Ramírez Heredia, President of the Unión Romaní in Spain and Honorary Member of Khetanes. Other activists, artists and scholars followed his example.

I believe we all must protest. Gandhi stated that human rights are the bread in this world. Without bread our civilization will starve. Please, react to roberto.malini@everyonegroup.com and/or
Artists_Initiative@ziggo.nl.

We demand that the charges against Roberto Malini and Dario Picciau are dropped!

When justice protects racists
by Juan de Dios Ramírez Heredia, Honorary Member of Khetanes

Barcelona, April 27, 2012. Many of you know of the existence of Roberto Malini. He is a tireless fighter. Roberto Malini's our friend, our brother, our ally. And within two days will be in court in Pesaro (Italy), and with him also appear Dario Picciau. Another great activist from the platform "Everyone Grup" show their faces in defense of Roma and any citizen who is a victim of racial or social discrimination.

I ask you to read the following lines. They are crieing against a brave and committed authorities to perform their duties without any regard to the most basic rights that are inherent to the dignity of every human being. Read the words of Roberto reflecting very clearly by the ordeal they are going through many of our brothers in Italy who have bequeathed to racist politicians who think the time has passed.

Juan de Dios Ramírez Heredia

The message by Roberto Malini
Treviglio (BG), April 22, 2012

Dear friends, I thank you for your support. We have spent many years working for social justice and we are persecuted for defending the rights of Roma and ask the institutions and authorities to respect their rights. We want to be a symbol of all those who are expelled, accused of unfairly and punished without any guilt.

In Italy, the police commit abuses and Rroma incriminating with false charges. Such sentences are unjust and they often end up in prison without having committed any crime. The juvenile courts and social services snatch children from their mothers and give them in adoption to Italian families. Do not help poor and marginalized communities, but the brutally expelled. Many hospitals refuse to treat Roma people, and politicians defame the Roma community to gain the favor of citizens.

But we know the truth and continue to devote our lives to defend it. We promise that we do not stop.We will continue to raise our voice against the abuses against our brothers and sisters gypsies. We have received threats, police and judicial harassment, and intimidation by political groups and racists. We are not violent but have powerful weapons: truth, justice and our ideals of brotherhood. We do not stop.

The Roma population suffers actual persecution in the European Union. We can not accept this continuing violation of human rights. In Italy, the hatred against the Roma is so strong that it also affects us, the defenders of human rights.

On April 27 the great activist Dario Picciau and I must defend before a judge in the terrible Court of Pesaro. What is our crime? None. Simply provide humanitarian aid to three young gypsies in front of a policeman. However, this was not the first time, because in Pesaro politicians, judges, police and many citizens have taken actions to force us to abandon the local Roma community. In Pesaro, many Roma have suffered incredible abuse and ended up in jail without guilt. We will go to the Court with pride and wearing a shirt with the image of Gandhi and the slogan: "Human rights are the bread of the world." We stand before the unjust judges of Pesaro with courage and pride, to represent all the gypsies who are and have been persecuted.

Dear Pit,

Don't leave. There is plenty of work here to do and I do not feel that anyone's attention was diverted in any distractive way. Words do hurt. You and Qristina and I and  Glenda and everyone here knows the power of words. Words can also heal.

Not everyone in a group shares the same philosophies and if all minds thought alike, then no one is thinking. Differing views are needed in a group, no matter what the purpose. They help people think outside the box.

We can still work together and we can still make progress. No one's work is any less important or more important that another's. Together we can make a difference.

This is an emotional issue, but this is an emotionally charged subject. Don't be demoralized, don't be disheartened. I've been in your shoes. I know the desire to walk away is strong, but you can restore your faith and desire if you choose to. I've made the choice to stay in this work despite the danger, the threats, and the abuse from both communities.

Don't leave. You are an asset, just as is Qristina, just as is Glenda, just as in anyone else in this group. Stay on the path, set the past behind you where it belongs and move forward.

In hope,

C

Pit, my phrala,

Do not leave. In leaving you are removing your talent--your magnificent heart and your passion--from our midst. We need you Pit, we need you because we need multiple ways of thinking and of doing. The site is called "khetanes" and it is only through working together that we will achieve anything. Words are not all; Art is not all--but combined they are a powerful force it will be hard to ignore.

Sometimes the passion and the commitment we each bring here rubs up against the other, both unsure which is the way to go. It's a process and learning and education--where we educate ourselves and our hearts to take a moment, to truly listen and to truly understand.

I greatly admire and respect you, Phral. Leave if you wish, but please know that Khetanes needs your voice. We need you, for there is only one Pit, only one person with your views, experience, and heart.

I'm in it with you, and so is Ciuin, Glenda, Els and everyone. The only way we will be able to stand strong together is through communication and sometimes, that communication may not agree with each of us. Yes, I was hurt--but I understand WHY the comments were made. I understand that perhaps I was wrong too--on some level--but I am not going to give up. I do what I can and I do it how I can and if people don't like it? Well, I'm sorry. I'm raising my voice in support of Roma and I will continue to do so until I die...

regardless of whether you, Els, Ciuin or anyone else tell me to shut up!!! ;-)

Let's do this together, Pit?

Comment by Ciuin Ferrin on May 16, 2012 at 23:01

You GO, girl! I have no intention of telling you to shut up! You are finding your voice. I enjoy watching you use it. Stay on, Pit.

Heye Pit,

You made our posters and our letterhead. You are part of Khetanes. No one here is an angel. We all make mistakes. I made one last week and my being tired is no excuse. I am sorry, I learned from it, but time passes. We need to carry on. There are so many things to be done!

Comment by Ciuin Ferrin on May 22, 2012 at 3:45

Dear Pit,

Qristina is fine, no need for further speeches. She doesn't need a pep talk and would really appreciate it if this conversation in the forums and other venues would end. We appreciate your work and enthusiasm, but this is a dead horse.

Caro Rromalen Andari lumija.

Dear Jonny,

I send you this answer from Sicily, Italy. And it is not a real answer, as I am not capable to give one. In general I believe that only Roma have the right to call themselves Gypsy or Gitan. Non Roma (Gadje) better use the words Roma and Sinti. Only me, a Gadji myself, cannot prescribe how Roma must/should call themselves. This is an issue of your people in the very first place. And whqtever you decide, non Roma will have to respect it.

I am Romni and I have had... many mixed feelings over the word Gypsy. I have experienced it being used directly against me in very negative ways, but I have also had to explain to people that I am Romani and when they look confused I find myself having to say "Gypsy". Then they say "oh, I understand!!" when quite clearly, they do not.

I used to get angry when people mistakenly called me Gypsy, or when other Roma said they were proud to be a Gypsy. I have since learned that in order to fully accept and be proud of who I am, I must learn to accept and be proud despite all the negative things attached to the word.

I don't think changing the word from Gypsy to Roma or Sinti or Kaale is going to do much. If people call us dirty Gypsy then they will call us dirty Roma too. It's not the words that are the problem--it's the way the words are thrown around in the media, the way movies and TV shows portray us; it's the way that people think that we want to be poor and live in such terrible conditions.

Moments like these I like to think that being a proud Gypsy will change the world...

but I am not so childish anymore. I know it's not about words like Gypsy or Roma. It doesn't matter what we call ourselves because the world isn't listening.

Comment by Stoimen on June 14, 2012 at 22:44

What's in a name, the English say. To a certain extent they are right. Prejudice cannot be stopped by inventing alternative names for similar misunderstanding and racist thoughts. Yet, as a writer I am aware of the power of words. If we consider language as communication, terms of abuse and euphenism are both examples of bad communication. The biggest challenge for a writer is to express himself clearly. A table is a table, a chair is a chair, a human being is a human being. Problem with the term Gypsy is, that it is understood as a minor human being, whereas the term Roma is often understood as a gentle word for the same phenomenon. It is my personal frustration that language cannot fight racism. We writers need the support from music, photos, films, paintings and sculptures to make mankind SEE and FEEL how stupid racism is. That is why we all must cooperate here and combine our skills.
