I think it would be wonderful to have translations too songs.
My father and his brothers and sister did not teach us our language. When they came to Australia they stopped speaking romani. I asked my aunt why, she said it is her fathers language and it is a secret. She then said she would only speak it to me in private "as you are now an adult" she said. I really only know a few words.
A very good idea! I remember that Elez Bislim has a large collection of songs. It is also an excellent way to promote Romani ch'ib! One should have the rights, then add a booklet with translations and maybe also photos or paintings by Romani artists.
Quick question: I used to know the base words of the Romani language(s), but I've forgotten over the years. Is there a (preferably free) place, such as a website or a library book, that could refresh my memory? I've always been terrible at languages--I have a logic disorder--but I used to be able to get the gist of conversations that way, and participate, even if in English. I doubt I'll ever master conversational anything, but the basic words that make up the different dialects I'd be immensely grateful for.
Thank you!
Two members who may help you: Viola Razavi and Claire-Lyne Xylena Apotheloz (short Xylena). They both mentioned a method to me, but I forgot the name. Niko Rergo is very well-informed, but also quite busy. Together with his daughter he works on the Romano Bibliography, a huge work. It may be difficult to reach Viola and Xylena (both are traveling now), but I am sure they check their mails.
