Hungaria part I: (via Paradi, Lilla)
Tonight 150 Hungarian Guards went to Cegled to invade a Hungarian Roma community.

Most of the Roma women took away their children to safer places because they were afraid of the Hungarian Guard.

Approximately 60 Roma men stayed behind in their homes.

The police assured people that there was to be no problems and everyone would be protected.

Earlier in the evening, the Roma and

the Guards stood face to face with weapons.

The Roma activists, Agi Daroczi, Jeno Zsigo, Janos Barsony, Jeno Setet, Joka Janos Daroczi and 25 others, went to the national police headquarters to report the threat.

Joka Janos Daroczi went to Cegled and remains there.

About 20 minutes after the reporting of the incident, more police were sent over to Cegled.

In the meantime, we got the news that a group of Fradi-Ujpest football fans were heading to Cegled after the match. Reports varied from 400-500 to up to 1,000 people were there. The Hungarian Guard sympathizers have spread through numerous streets where Roma live.

The situation is calm at the moment.

The Roma know and understand that they will not react to these provocations, although they are quite afraid. They are afraid for their lives and their families.

Hungaria Part II (via Paradi, Lilla)

Statement

There was a state of emergency in Cegled after the right-wing extremists stated that the Hungarian Guard and the police were attacked by the Roma. The Pest County Police refuted that any disorderly conduct or assaults occurred, but the rumor was enough to mobilize a nationwide call of neo-facists to continue terrorizing the Roma through barikad.hu, kuruc.info, and szentkoronaradio.com.

With this action, they have committed a hate crime.

The news on the night of August 19, hundreds (400-500 people, a thousand according to other information) flooded into Cegled. Many of the Roma families fled in fear, many to their relatives. We believe that every legal norm is untenable and the contradictory positions are responsible for the development of the policy on behalf of the government

and police leadership as these are similar to the right-wing as they have tolerated these racist acts through their inaction.

Roma organizations and representatives held a vigil at the National Police Headquarters through the night. They reported the accusations of a criminal offense apartheid of the Hungarian Guard. They asked the Roma to remain calm and not to yield to provocation.

We expect the complete diligence of the state, that the police act with the full rigors of the law on behalf of the public peace, social harmony and human dignity. We are in solidarity with the police, who perform their work and have been also attacked by the right-wing extremists.

We expect the government to fulfill its international obligations and prevent and stop racial violence.

The government should act against the continual physical threats against Gypsies. It is intolerable that the right-wing forces besiege and blockade Hungarian citizens and families in their homes.

Until these conditions are met, Hungary is not a safe country for Roma. For the right-wing, we have become the scapegoats. Their real goal is to overthrow the rule of law and democracy.

According to Prof. Géza Jeszenszky, many Roma are mentally ill, because in Roma culture sisters and brothers or cousins are permitted to marry each other or to have sexual intercourse. His statement on mental illness is made in the context of perpetuated poverty, widespread social problems and crime.

Please, see a page from the book "Post-communist Europe and its National/Ethnic Problems: a coursepack, Theme 9 'Minorities in Hungary: the issue of Roma (Gypsies). Minority self-government', p.273. Kairosz Kiado, Budapest, 2009

Author is Professor Géza Jeszenszky, teaching at the Corvinus University, one of the most prestigious universities in Hungary.

... *speechless*.... I shouldn't be... but... wow.

I will certainly be drafting a letter sooner rather than later!

Comment by Stoimen on October 26, 2012 at 14:58

I was really upset, Qristina! This makes me think of Hitler's racial doctrines. Yesterday I learned about this for the first time. Ian Hancock is spreading the page, asking people to react. Today the book page was distributed by RVN. I think this is worse than MBFGW or American Gypsies. These films are insulting rubbish, the book is a punishable act of racism. And it is dangerous!

Qristina, you wrote you will draft a letter, as I cannot manage that, I would be very thankful if I could co-sign your one, may be others would like to that, too!! Please let me know whether this will be possible. Thank you.

Comment by Qristina Zavačková Cummings on October 26, 2012 at 17:44

Viola, certainly I can draft a letter as soon as I get home from work later today. I will post here when I have drafted it and then all who want to can sign it.
