So, yesterday I had to read part of a paper I wrote--which I hope might become part of my thesis. It was what they call an "autoethnography", which is something that include your own voice and research that other's have completed.
I wrote about my life as phurnavi (light-skinned Roma) and difficult and hurtful times because of it. It was hard to write and even harder to read. …

I found out that I won't get to speak at the TEDx event. I think that I am not good enough or something. I really wanted to give a talk about Roma and the Porajmos and education for our children. I gave them an outline and they said to me:
"There aren't Roma in the United States and if there are somewhere, they aren't in our area"... I said, but wait, I'm Roma! They said, no, you're not Roma...
So, I am very upset. I feel like I've let myself and everyone down. I don't have PhD…

I was asked today, "what are you?" when I was talking about Rroma. They said, no no, there are no Romanians here. I said no, I am Rroma. So, I had to explain gypsy.
They told me "you don't look like one, you can't be one". I argue for an hour that my ethnicity is what I say it is.
I am not used to that. In Europe people hate me openly for being prostitute dirty thieving gypsy. Here in US people think I "died out" or don't exist. Or worst still, I am a ... Disney…

Dear Qristina,
We are very glad that artists discover our site themselves. We work very hard on addressing artists, so your spontaneous reaction is a great help indeed!
Feel free to join one or more groups and to forward ideas or to post comments. We are in the process of preparing our first activities in all kinds of artistic disciplines.
Thanks so much for joining!
Els
Many thanks, Qristina, many thanks for your commitment!
I am honored with your friendship Qristina, welcome aboard.
I have read a little of your plight and can only offer this observation......
Yes, there are 'Roma' in America. They are just stereotyped into one box with the others called 'Gypsy.' One of the largest 'Roma' families lives in Florida; the Adams Family or Adamonovitches (sp) of Hungarian/Romanian extraction with more of that same family in California around the Sacramento, Santa Rosa area and also in Hawaii. Some are personal musician friends of mine such as Juan Adamono (King of the Guitar), H/R extraction whom I had hired to perform at the college I was attending in 1975/76 for a cultural exchange ... American River College in Sacramento, CA.(Documented)
That is like Europeans telling me that there are no 'real' American Indians in Europe! That American Indians are just 'legendary toys' from a 'Karl May' fiction novel of a Race of People now extinct. A few hundred of us Real (sic) 'Indians' over here would venture to argue that idiotic point! I have often heard that 'ignorance is bliss'; I still meet a lot of people who keep trying to prove the validity of that statement!
My advice would be.....
Do speak and be heard. Speak with the pride of who and what you are from the heart. People need to be educated, not stereotyped! The question isn't thinking your not good enough....you are! People just have problems dealing with the truth when they hear it from someone who has lived it. If you don't speak, who will? Can they express your thoughts and feelings as you would? No, they can't! They haven't walked that mile in your moccasins yet, have they?
Walk in beauty Qristina,
'Sky'
Good luck for your paperwork Qristina!!!
60 page is much - I hope all runs well for you!!!
